Skin peels for acne & pigmentation

Understanding pigmentation and whether a carefully selected skin peel could be part of your treatment plan.

Plan a consultation

Understanding pigmentation

Hyperpigmentation describes patches of skin that are darker than the surrounding skin. Examples discussed in your consultation may include post-acne marks, sun-related spots and melasma.

Different causes need different approaches. Darker pigmentation is not the same as loss of pigment, and an unexplained or changing mark should be assessed before cosmetic treatment.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel applies a selected solution to the skin to produce controlled exfoliation. Peels differ in their depth and may be considered for certain acne, uneven tone or surface texture concerns.

A peel may form part of a broader plan that includes prescribed skin care and sun protection. It is not a guaranteed cure for acne or pigmentation.

Choosing a suitable plan

The dermatologist will consider your skin tone, the cause and depth of pigmentation, current medicines and previous treatments. Treatment must be selected carefully because irritation can itself lead to pigment changes.

Melasma and some other pigmentation problems may recur. Discuss likely improvement, alternatives and whether repeated treatment is appropriate.

Recovery and risks

Peeling, redness, sensitivity and downtime vary with the type of peel. Risks include burns, infection, scarring and lighter or darker patches of skin.

Follow the prescribed preparation and aftercare. Do not pick peeling skin or try a strong peel at home. Ask when to restart your usual products and how to protect healing skin from the sun.

YOUR QUESTIONS

A little more clarity.

Can a peel permanently remove melasma?

A permanent result cannot be promised. Melasma may recur and usually needs continuing skin care and sun protection.

Is the same peel suitable for every skin tone?

No. Skin tone, sensitivity and the condition being treated influence the choice and strength of peel.

How much downtime is needed?

This varies with the peel and your skin. Your dermatologist will explain the expected recovery and aftercare.
